Based
in Chattanooga, Tennessee, HelpForHumans.Org was conceived
in 1999, right at the start of the internet boom. The purpose
of Help For Humans is to help people and caretakers locate
resources in their time of need and to help experienced caretakers
share knowledge and information with those in need of it
by creating a grass roots resource network. Listed services
consist of foundations, support groups and any other type
of organization which provides some kind of free help.
The
types of groups and foundations we will list will include but
not be limited to Alcohol, Narcotics, Violence Intervention, Child
Welfare and Disease support groups. We may at some time in the
future also list emergency contact information and national poison
control and suicide hotlines.
Help
For Humans
will exist as a 501c3 Not-For-Profit organization.
The
primary focus, or backbone of HelpForHumans.org are directories.
A directory is similar to a search engine but is maintained
by humans. Imagine the directory as the yellow pages. They
are assembled, categorized and verified for veracity. Each
link is tested for accuracy and reliability before being posted.
Right now many of the links (which total over 1000) in the
associations database are out of date. We're working now to
get everything updated.
HelpForHumans.org
is designed to be of help to a broad spectrum of people. It
is designed not only to provide information about direct help
sources, such as associations and support groups, but to help
those in need by providing educational tools to those who provide
help directly. The types of people who can be helped by these
tools are rape crisis counselors, suicide prevention workers,
addiction counselors just to name a few. We will provide learning
tools to these people by creating online communities, with
forums, calendars and articles, where people who work in these
fields can go to meet with and ask questions of those who are
experienced in them. These communities will be narrowly focused
as per subject matter and will be moderated. This will mean
that a rape crisis counselor working in Des Moines who just
started on the job can ask a question of a rape crisis counselor
with 15 years experience, who is working in Atlanta. Without
a resource such as this, these two might never meet and have
the opportunity to share information.
Part of our mission is to encourage people in the public eye to
take stances related to issues which they are interested in. HelpForHumans.org
was founded by photojournalist and web developer Fil Manley in
1999. While doing artist interviews and writing articles, he began
to realize that most artists are more than willing to talk about
social issues if they feel that the purpose isn't to exploit, but
to encourage change and awareness. Because of this, he decided
to use the HelpForHumans.org website as a vehicle for artist interviews,
photos and articles. This serves the two-fold purpose of providing
a not-for- profit motive for interviews and also provides free
publicity to the search engine.
